What bespoke timber sash windows should I choose for my project?

The beauty of timber sash windows is the huge level of design flexibility they offer. No other window material comes close when considering the number of different available styles. This is mainly down to the skilled craftsmanship needed for the production of timber sash windows. While uPVC or aluminium windows are mass produced, the manufacturing process of timber windows still requires traditional craftsmanship, which opens up a world of design possibilities.

At Nine Zero, we can manufacture almost any style of bespoke timber sash window to suit any property. While there aren’t many limitations to what we can manufacture, we thought we’d break down some popular styles which you may choose for your project.

What timber sash window styles are available?

The main three sash window styles can be broken down into different eras of British architecture, with Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian. The style you need for your project will often depend on the aesthetics of your property and its period, however, if you’re working on a newbuild development you may want to choose one of these options to match the style you’re trying to create.

Georgian sash windows– Georgian architecture is a striking and unique style which helped create some of the most iconic buildings in the country, oozing 18th-century elegance and class. These buildings often feature windows split into 6 panels on both top and bottom sashes.

Victorian sash windows – With the advancement of glass manufacturing, panes of glass could be made larger than the Georgian style. Victorian sash windows were often comprised of two panels on top and bottom sashes and also paved the way for more creative designs. The Victorian era also saw the introduction of sash horns, designed to remove some of the additional strain added to the frames from the heavier glass panes.

Edwardian sash windows – Edwardian sash windows saw a combination of Victorian and Georgian styling, featuring 6 panes of glass in the top sash and 2 panes in the bottom sash.

Curved and bowed sash windows – These were a key feature of Georgian and Victorian properties, sash windows with curved tops feature on Georgian properties and bowed sash windows started to become more and more popular during the Victorian era.
