How to install timber sash windows
At Nine Zero we have been manufacturing unique timber windows and doors that are rooted in British craftsmanship. From period and historic buildings to modern urban designs, our products have been specifically designed to suit every character and style of property.
What are timber sash windows?
Timber sash windows add classic style and character to a property. They are perfectly suited to add a period aesthetic, as well as providing energy efficiency and security. There are a wide range of styles, colours and glazing options to suit any property.
How to install sash windows
When you have received your timber sash window order from Nine Zero, please read the installation manual carefully as to not invalidate your warranties in the unlikely event of a claim being made. Our installation manual gives you details on how to check your order, handling, storage, preparation and installation of your new timber sash windows. Installation instructions are on page 9 -15 of the guide here.
Our guidance on installation is designed to provide support to a competent qualified fitter. Due to the variations in building design, installation sequence and many other variables, it is not possible to cover a complete step-by-step guide to installation. The approach requires the competent fitter to follow our guide to best practice, adapting to suit the building requirements and observing the specific instructions provided. It is always a challenge to install a high-performance timber product, especially on refurbishment properties. The best practice guides the installer to ensure the final install meets British Standards set out in BS 8213.
How long should timber sash windows last?
Timber sash windows have an average life expectancy of up to 60 years. However, this depends on how well they are looked after. Timber windows need to be regularly cared for and maintained to ensure that they last as long as they can.
For maintenance, care and protection and warranties turn to pages 23-30 of the installation guide.
How to spot poorly installed timber sash windows
New sash windows should make a property more comfortable, but if they are not installed correctly, they will do the opposite, leaving your customer with draughts, leaks and high heating bills.
Here are a few signs that a window might be installed incorrectly:
- Creaking and squeaking windows when they are opened or closed, may indicate that the window is too loose or too tight
- Gaps around the window means that the window was ordered incorrectly, and means that heat can escape, or leaks will occur. Small gaps can be corrected with expanding foam or caulk, but if the gap is too large then a replacement window will need ordering.
- The new sash window should open and close smoothly without sticking. If it doesn’t then it could be that it isn’t properly aligned or is the wrong size.
- A badly installed window can cause leaks. Over time a leaky window can cause damage to the property’s paint work or wallpaper
