How environmentally friendly are timber doors?
Now more than ever, sustainability is at the forefront of people’s minds, with the environmental impact of decisions being front and centre for homeowners when choosing how to improve their properties. Whether it’s buying electric cars, solar panel installations or LED lightbulbs, sustainability has become a huge factor in consumers’ decisions. An independent study commissioned by SmartestEnergy found that 4 out of 5 people would choose a brand that had a positive commitment to environmental sustainability.
When it comes to doors, traditionally homeowners have opted for PVCu, composite, or aluminium materials. Although these are all effective options for any home, with a range of benefits, when it comes to sustainability, these door types aren’t necessarily the most environmentally friendly. When taking into consideration the whole life cost, timber doors are without doubt the most sustainable choice.
Are timber doors sustainably sourced?
Where the timber is sourced from plays a big impact on the overall sustainability of the final product. At Nine Zero, we use FSC certified engineered Redwood and Red Grandis timber, meaning our products are made from sustainable and well managed forests – a truly 100% renewable, natural resource that is biodegradable. FSC forest management certification confirms that the forest is managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability. FSC-certified forests are managed to strict environmental, social and economic standards. Every piece of timber we use has full traceability back to an FSC certified forest, so look out for the distinct FSC tree logo and you will be safe in the knowledge that you are supporting the forests of the world.
How energy efficient are timber doors?
Not only are timber doors sustainably sourced, but they also offer exceptional performance to help create well insulated buildings. As timber is a natural insulator it means our doors offer U-values as low as 0.7 w/m2k, meaning that heat loss and draughts are minimised, and homes are kept warm even during the winter months.
How sustainable are they after the production process?
At the Nine Zero factory, we actively work to reduce our carbon footprint and impact on the environment. We recycle all our timber waste on the surrounding farms and provide a source of renewable energy to the local dwellings. All of our electricity comes from certified renewable sources like solar, wind, hydro and biofuel, and we use eco-conscious energy companies. Not only this, but we also commit to planting five trees for every order placed, so you can be assured that when you choose timber doors from Nine Zero, you’re working with a sustainable supplier.
How long do timber doors last?
Years ago, maintenance was a huge issue for timber door owners, requiring regular sanding, priming and painting. Improved technological advances has meant that this is no longer an issue, and doors manufactured today are low maintenance, with a lifespan of approximately 60 years, with PVC-U doors having a lifespan of 30 years. We offer a 30-year guarantee against timber rot and decay, as well as a 10-year guarantee on insulated glass units, paints and stain defects and a 5-year guarantee on ironmongery.
