At Nine Zero, our timber windows and doors can transform a property, providing an authentic period look to even the most modern of homes.
Timber has often been overlooked as a building material, with false information often shared around its features. We wanted to do some timber myth-busting and set the record straight, proving how timber windows and doors can offer excellent performance, combined with stunning style.
Timber is a strong and durable material
A common misconception is that timber is weak and not durable. Wood is naturally strong, making it an efficient building material. At Nine Zero, we make our timber windows and doors from naturally robust wood, with safety and security at the forefront of our minds. If timber products are well maintained, they can have a lifespan of up to 60 years or more. They’re also relatively low maintenance, with repainting needed every ten years or so, to ensure they are weather resistant.
Timber meets the required acoustic standards
Nine Zero offer a soundproofed timber window as typically timber is a light material, meaning it doesn’t absorb sound or contract vibrations as well as other heavier materials do. At Nine Zero, our windows are designed efficiently and have suitable glazing to ensure they meet the acoustic performance standards required. But this shouldn’t stop people installing timber windows into their properties, as they can be soundproofed.
Why not take it one step further and install acoustic glazing for extra sound protection? Our noise reduction glass is made from two panes which have been laminated together using an acoustic membrane. This membrane then absorbs the sound energy vibration through the glass, keeping the sound out. If you’re looking for something different to acoustic glazing but with similar benefits, check out our blog about the glass options available at Nine Zero.
Timber is sustainable
Many people believe that using timber as a building material will facilitate deforestation. As long as timber is bought from sustainably managed forests, this is not the case. At Nine Zero, for every order placed, we plant 5 trees. It’s important to us to keep our factory sustainable, whilst producing timber windows and doors, which is why we use FSC-certified engineered Redwood and Red Grandis timber for all our products. Find out more about our sustainability policy here.
Timber is fireproof
This may come as a surprise! Timber is typically a combustible material, but it can actually be treated with special substances to make it fire retardant. We understand why many believe timber windows and doors are a fire risk, but at Nine Zero, we apply a chemical formula as standard to protect the timber and add fire resistance.
Timber has excellent energy efficiency
Wood is a naturally insulating material with very low levels of thermal conductivity, giving timber window frames excellent levels of thermal performance. Our timber windows have U-values as low as 0.7 W/m²K to retain heat in the home and meet BS 6375:2015 Parts 1 & 2 for weathertightness.
Timber is perfect for conservation areas and listed buildings
Typically for conservation areas and listed buildings, windows and doors have to abide by specific regulations to preserve the historical and architectural elements of the area. Our timber windows not only blend seamlessly with heritage properties but come complete with modern day advancements to make sure they also perform.
